Sam’s Journey with Cholesteatoma
Nine years ago, when my son Sam was just four years old, he was diagnosed with a rare condition called Cholesteatoma—a non-cancerous skin cyst that grows behind the eardrum. If left untreated, it severely damages hearing and surrounding bone structures. By the time we discovered it, the damage was already done, leaving Sam with permanent hearing loss in his right ear.
Living with single-sided hearing loss makes everyday life challenging for a child. Sam struggles to navigate noisy environments, participate fully in busy classrooms, or determine where sounds are coming from.
Sam’s treatment: Ossiculoplasty
We were fortunate to meet Dr. James at SickKids Hospital, who recommended Ossiculoplasty—a surgery to rebuild the damaged bones in the ear using prosthetics. Over the past eight years, Sam has undergone this difficult procedure four times. After three unsuccessful attempts, he had his fourth surgery just two weeks ago, and we are currently holding our breath for the results.
Why Your Support Matters
Because Cholesteatoma is relatively rare, research funding is severely limited. To improve surgery outcomes, surgeons like Dr. James test subtle prosthetic variations, but hospitals lack the resources to systematically collect research data and track long-term success metrics.
That is where we can make a difference. While hearing loss may not be life-threatening, restoring sound completely transforms a child’s life. With your generous donation, we can advance pediatric otology research and build better surgical solutions for Sam and children like him.
