Sarah Hamby passed away on the morning of October 6th, 2025 at SickKids Hospital. She was held by her mother, Gillian; her father, Mark; and her sister, Kiarra as she took her last breath. Sarah will be greatly missed by countless family members and friends. She will also be missed by many incredible doctors, nurses, child life specialists, and other hospital staff. Sarah spent 13 of her 16 years bravely fighting a long battle with cancer.
Sarah’s strength, determination, happiness, and love for life was inspiring and will be remembered by so many. She was first diagnosed with leukaemia in October 2012, and she fought cancer a total of 9 times in her short life. Sarah always remained optimistic, and was able to find something to look forward to no matter the situation. She did not let her illness stop her from living her life the best way she could.
Sarah loved baking, painting, animals, Disney, swimming, playing games, and spending time with those she loved. She was always determined to continue going to school as much as possible, even while she was on active cancer treatment. She set a lot of goals for herself, and always dreamed of becoming a Child Life Specialist to help other children in similar situations. Sarah was also a proud ambassador for SickKids, and loved to be involved with numerous charities and sharing what they all meant to her. Sarah wanted to be remembered not by her disease, but by the way she lived and never let anything stop her, even when she had to learn to do things differently.
Since 2020, local Toronto band BROOMFILLER recorded an annual punk rock Christmas cover song and music video, with 100% of the proceeds going to Sick Kids Hospital on behalf of Sarah.
Sarah made a cameo appearance in 2023’s “12 Days of Christmas” music video.
